Taitung has a relatively good public transportation system, with buses and trains connecting the city with neighboring areas. Renting a scooter is also a popular and affordable option for getting around the city and exploring the scenic coastal roads. Overall, Taitung offers an affordable and convenient destination for travelers seeking to experience a more laidback way of life in Taiwan. You’ll find lots of teashops, cheap street food and restaurants that serve everything from Sushi to Kimchi and from burgers to dumplings.
The most notable attraction here is Brown Boulevard – a long stretch of road through lush rice fields with epic mountain backdrops. Besides cycling down Brown Boulevard, there are a couple of other noteworthy attractions. Tiehua Music Village is a large outdoor music performance  venue; at night, you can catch various artists performing around the 台東最強伴手禮 park. The Twilight Market is a good place to start if you’re into music. A couple of local stalls sell drinks, snacks, and aboriginal handicrafts here, and there’s some makeshift seating in front of the main stage where you can sit down and enjoy the tunes. In New Taipei City, you’ll find the rural district of Pinglin — known for tea plantations, tea shops, and the Pinglin Tea Museum (that’s right, a museum dedicated to Taiwanese tea!). A trip to Pinglin Old Street affords you a tea masterclass with any of its longtime tea shop owners. It’s also the quietest ‘Old Street’ in Taipei, so take it as a chance to escape the crowds. Serious cyclists or even moderately serious cyclists will find Taitung a perfect place for cycling. The Taiwanese cyclist already know this and you will find no shortage of them.

You’ll also get a glimpse into how some of the landmarks around the city were built. There’s nothing too  exciting about the place, except for the water literally running uphill.
This option comes in handy when you don’t have any specific itinerary. Most shops in Taitung can be found along neighboring Zhonghua, Datong and Zhengqi roads. These streets are lined with local shops and boutiques selling everything from local crafts, souvenirs, accessories and snacks.
