Kpoint’s “Ma 6t a craqué” featuring Ninho, and DaBaby’s “Find My Way” are two videos in which both rappers appear in red and black checkered overshirts, à la Kurt Cobain. In Kodak Black’s “Calling My Spirit,” the women featured in the video sport black-and-white checkered jumpsuits. It wasn’t recorded with that beat in mind – I was just recording long pieces of audio, then going back, digging in and chopping ’em up. The drums I took from an old Boss drum machine – I recorded that through effects and chopped it into a loop. Just kinda freestyle, play one or two beats of something so at the end I have 45 minutes of a bunch of different drum beats or patterns. I’ll play a bunch of different types of rhythms to cut loops of, but if I hear something and think, “I might want this just by itself,” I’ll make sure to have the sounds separated. The Jungle Brothers, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest emphasized Black pride with positive lyrics and African clothing. Some trace the popularity of thick gold chains, worn by Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J and Run-DMC, to African tribal history. In the early days of hip-hop, winners of rap battles in the street won jewelry and wore it like an Olympic gold medal. Early DJs like DJ Kool Demons In The Dark Herc and Grandmaster Flash played breaks in soul and funk music that emphasized the drums and bass line of which Kurtis Blow later let us know. In the 1990s, a prolonged confrontation between West Coast gangsta rappers and the resurging East Coast began. It centered around Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. and led to both of their deaths, in 1996 and 1997 respectively.
As music grew throughout the 2000s, the competitive edge took another turn with 50 Cent being the main instigator to inspire rappers to make hit songs. His debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin” was the gas that lit the fuel and got the ball rolling in terms of rap artists focusing on constructing good structured songs that appealed to the people, along with some form of theatrics to promote it. Artists such as Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, and Janet Jackson gave the 2000s Hip Hop era a little more flavor in terms of creating their music videos to be just as enjoyable as their song. Blending the two seemingly opposite genres of country music and hip hop, hick hop music has taken the music world by storm. Known also as kuntry or rural rap, which rose to prominence in the early 2000s, has continued to rise and grow in popularity.
